Fight Back Against Plaque!
< Back to ArticlesDental plaque is the soft sticky substance that forms on teeth and causes decay, gum disease, and halitosis (bad breath). Plaque feeds on the food we eat, especially sugars. Healthy habits, like regular brushing and flossing, as well as routine cleanings, help remove the plaque and keep your teeth and gums healthy.
When plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar, which can build up and collect below the gum line. This makes brushing and flossing more difficult. Without treatment, tartar can lead to tooth decay and periodontal (gum) problems.
Tips for Fighting Plaque:
- Brush twice a day and use fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss daily.
- Eat a healthy diet with limited sugary snacks and junk food.
- Schedule regular professional dental cleanings and oral exams.
- Ask about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can deter decay.
